NFDI-MatWerk Contribution to BdT PhD Seminar

On 03 April 2025, the BdT PhD Seminar took place at Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt during the Materials Week 2025.

The event was initiated by the research initiative Biologisierung der Technik (BdT) and held in collaboration with Platform MaterialDigital. It addressed the role of research data management (RDM) in scientific workflows and was aimed at PhD candidates and PostDocs working in experimental or modelling contexts, especially in interdisciplinary fields.

NFDI-MatWerk participated actively with two keynote contributions: Dr. Steffen Brinckmann (Forschungszentrum Jülich), Dr.-Ing. Leonid Gerdt (Fraunhofer IWS) and Ebrahim Norouzi (FIZ Karlsruhe) shared insights into practical aspects of RDM, from the structure of data management plans to the use of scientific metadata and electronic lab notebooks and a practical understanding of ontologies. Their presentations showed how structured RDM can support research transparency and reusability - regardless of prior knowledge in the field.

Further contributions came from Platform MaterialDigital and included a more industrial perspective on research data management, including electronic lab notebooks and applying RDM tools in real-life research settings.

A discussion encouraged participants to reflect on how RDM can enhance their own doctoral work and long-term data strategies.
