Summary report on the short webinar "Hydrogen as an energy carrier"

What mechanisms can result in a pipeline under the influence of hydrogen pulling the rug out from under us? - Jens Jürgensen, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, explored this question in his presentation "Hydrogen as an energy carrier - material challenges and solutions" in the short webinar on 26 April 2022.

Mainly the diffusible hydrogen, which can get into the metal during manufacturing and during operation, for example of a hydrogen pipeline, represents a significant challenge in the implementation of hydrogen in the energy sector. The insights into the material mechanics of brittle hydrogen fracture and the associated testing techniques were followed by probably the most exciting part for the 125 participants - some approaches to preventing component failure due to hydrogen and how critical hydrogen in metals is to be assessed. The thirst for knowledge did not decrease after the lecture, as an almost hour-long discussion on various further topics followed.
