Becoming fit for the future: Working group "Accompanying Elements in Aluminium" meets in Freiberg

From 01 to 02 June 2022, the DGM working group "Accompanying Elements in Aluminium" of the Aluminium Technical Committee met at the TU Bergakademie in the Saxon silver and UNESCO World Heritage city of Freiberg. The joy at the reunion and the professional cooperation on-site and virtually were noticeable among the total of 24 participants. Prof. Dr. Peter Krug, Technical University of Cologne, commented: "I am an Aluminian. Aluminum flows in my heart."

In an informal atmosphere, experts from science, industry, and professional associations presented current, application-related issues and research activities in the fields of Fe-containing recycled aluminum alloys with intermetallic phases and neutron diffraction on aluminum. Great interest was shown in focal points on the heat treatment and fatigue properties of aluminum and alloy systems that have to meet the requirements of "Green Aluminium." The latter topic, in particular, will become increasingly relevant in the technical discourse of the FA Aluminium about aluminum as a future material. Three guided tours of the Institute of Materials Engineering, the Institute of Materials Science, and the Foundry Institute provided a vivid diversion from the technical presentations on-site. After two days, the specialist meeting "Accompanying elements in aluminum" of one of the most renowned DGM specialist committees, "Aluminium," came to a successful end with consistently positive feedback from the participants.

Many thanks to Dr Hanka Becker, Dr Torsten Staab, Prof. Dr Andreas Leinweber and Prof. Dr Krug, whose commitment enabled the working group to meet in Freiberg for the first time.
