Additive Manufacturing Expert Committee met on the topic of surfaces

On 20 June 2022, representatives from industry and research met online for the Additive Manufacturing Expert Committee meeting. There was again an increase in the number of participants with 58 registrations. Under the topic "Surfaces", six project outlines were presented, which mainly deal with the fatigue properties of additively manufactured components, but also with convection-based heat exchange. With the second topic, there has also been a noticeable focus on copper and copper alloy systems in presented sketches.

The additive processes mentioned in the project outlines are primarily the metallic powder bedding processes, but an application idea for the additive wire arc process was also presented.

This reflects well the "Market Development and Trends in Additive Manufacturing 2021 to 2026" by Dr. Maximilian Munsch of AMPOWER, which was presented as part of a stimulus lecture. Here, Dr. Munsch presents that laser beam powder bed processes in particular dominate the market. Despite the strong growth of direct energy deposition processes and binder jetting, forecasts indicate that laser beam powder bed processes will continue to dominate the market for metal additive manufacturing. On the distribution of industrial sectors, the combined sector of "Aviation, Defense & Space" takes the largest shares with 21% of the total market. "Medical", however, is the largest stand-alone sector with 15% market share, he said. Further topics of Dr. Munsch's presentation were considerations of the technological maturity and industrialization of various AM processes for metals as well as polymers. The slides of the AMPOWER presentation are available for download.
