The month of September: The DGM on Tour! Bamberg - Saarbrücken - Darmstadt

With the 4th European Symposium on Superalloys and their Applications, the 56th Metallography Conference, the DGM Day, and the MSE 2022, the DGM and the DGM-Inventum toured Bavaria, Saarland, and Hesse in September.

Numerous guests, speakers, industry and cooperation partners, and our DGM members traveled with the DGM to the hybrid-organized specialist scientific events. Those who were not present on-site used the online streaming of the DGM Inventum conference platform to follow the conferences. The attendance figures confirm the high interest in personal and professional networking in our international and national MSE community:

- 4th European Symposium on Superalloys and their Applications, 18-22 September 2022, Bamberg:
110 online, 212 on-site

- 56th Metallography Conference, 21-23.09.2022, Saarbrücken:
99 online, 207 On-site

- DGM-Tag 2022, 26.09.2022, Darmstadt:

DGM Day 2022
In an impressive last week of September, the DGM tour ended with the DGM Day 2022 and the subsequent MSE Congress 2022 in Darmstadt. A reunion that was a pleasure - after what felt like two virtual years, the handshakes of the participants on-site at both events were all the more heartfelt. For the current DGM President, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martina Zimmermann and the DGM President, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider, the opening of the DGM Day was a special moment. For the last time in their presidential function, they moderated the election of the board of directors, advisory board, and auditors and the personal presentation of DGM honors and awards to excellent researchers in our field during DGM Day. At the turn of the year, the well-rehearsed duo will hand over their presidential office for the term ending 2023/2024 to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Birgit Skrotzki, Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Heilmaier, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Monday evening concluded in a festive atmosphere at the dinner with the DGM Convent, where the laureates, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Jürgen Christ and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl Ulrich Kainer gratefully accepted their DGM Honorary Membership 2022 with very personal words and memories.

MSE Congress 2022
The MSE Congress 2022 presented itself as a hybrid symposium of superlatives. Three congress days, a total of 1156 participants from 43 countries, 98 Highlight Lectures, 595 Lectures, 209 Posters, and 7 Plenary Lectures in 16 rooms, live and virtual. In addition to the seven official main themes of the scientific program, two other relevant thematic complexes emerged that met broad demand in the MSE community: "Promotion of Young Scientists" and "Women in Science." The latter was well received in its format, the "Women's Breakfast." In the morning session, around 50 female scientists discussed and exchanged views on the questions: Does the DGM need its own women's network? Do men and women communicate differently on the job? How can young female researchers find support in their scientific careers through the DGM?

Active participation in scientific events such as the MSE Congress 2022 also plays an increasing role for young researchers to obtain support and encouragement from our community. Michéle Scholl, former national spokesperson of the Young DGM, in a statement on this:

"Lately, we as young people are getting more and more opportunities to get involved in the congress program. Last year at Materials Week, we were able to help select the poster prizes. At the MSE Congress, we could visibly help shape the program with the lunch quiz. We look forward to being able to show our presence at further congresses and to keep raising the issue of young talent in other rounds, as the dwindling student numbers are not only noticeable in the local groups."

We thank all participants who, through their participation and professional and personal exchange, make a professional society like the DGM a lively network and a platform for ideas and the exchange of thoughts.

4th European Symposium on Superalloys and their Applications, 18.-22.09.2022, Bamberg:
With 110 online and 212 present participants, the hybrid-organized "Superalloys" got off to a super start. From 18 to 22 September 2022, the international congress focused on Ni- and Co-based superalloys and their related materials and was held in Bamberg. The conference chair, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Mathias Göken, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, invited the auditorium to the plenary and thematic lectures on the eleven main topics and to socialize within the framework of the accompanying program of the Superalloys.

During the four-day event, experts from science and industry provided information on all topics in the field of superalloy research, including alloy development, processing effects, mechanical behavior, microstructural investigations, coatings, and environmental influences. Of increasing importance also in the field of superalloys were contributions focusing on sustainability and life cycle assessment, material selection through digital data analysis and artificial intelligence, and material modeling and simulation.

The city tour and the brewery tour familiarised the participants with the country's special features so that the social evening topics went far beyond the technical and scientific.

The DGM would like to thank Prof. Dr. Göken for his professional cooperation and commitment to organizing the symposium. Also, to all speakers and participants - thank you very much for your participation.

56th Metallography Conference, 21-23.09.2022, Saarbrücken:
It's worth being there! This was the invitation issued by the DGM just a few weeks before the start of the 56th Metallography Conference, which was held online under the direction of Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich and invited to Saarbrücken. 207 metallographers accepted the invitation and were happy to meet again in the Audimax on the Saarbrücken university campus.

Each day of the three-day symposium offered the participants professional and personal highlights. In addition to the traditional focal points of preparation and microscopic microstructure imaging, microstructure analysis as well as metallographic damage analysis, the topics of the Saarbrücken Metallography Conference included two seminal themes, the further development, and application of tomography methods from the micro to the nano to the atomic scale and the application of state-of-the-art computer science expertise and artificial intelligence.

These focal points also formed cross-cutting themes with the International Metallographic Society (IMS), which was also presented with top-class lectures at the IMS Symposium on Metallography Conference.

With the mayor's reception in the town hall, two short courses, the highlight lecture by astronaut Matthias Maurer and the factory tour of the 300-year-old traditional company Dillinger Hütte, metallography offered a wealth of opportunities to enter into professional discourse and personal exchange.

The DGM would like to thank all exhibitors, the conference chair Prof. Dr. Mücklich and the organizational team for the smooth and successful running of the event. The success on site was noticeable.
