Parallel to the 78th Heat Treatment Congress (HK) with its general meeting, practitioners' conference and trade fair, the AWT and the DGM jointly organized the scientific conference Steel Innovation (SI) for the first time.

The three-day attendance event kicked off with the opening of the trade fair, followed by the meetings of the AWT expert committees "Quenching" and "Quality assurance in heat treatment" and the joint committee " Materials Technology Steel " of the AWT and DGM. From Wednesday, 12 October 2022, interested visitors could choose between the parallel congress programs of the Hardening Congress and Steel Innovation.

A big special awaited all visitors to both congresses on the last day. Under the heading "Sustainability Concepts for the Steel and Heat Treatment Industry" of the joint symposium of Heat Treatment Congress and Steel Innovation, the speakers used current research reports to clarify that we have to rethink steel. CO₂- and energy reduction, sustainable materials development, hydrogen technology, and the circular economy are also inevitable challenges for metallurgy. Dirty, dirty, steel?! - For the steel industry to remain competitive, steel as material must not only be rethought in the long term. However, it must also be applied in close cooperation between research and industry. Green steel, as a recyclable raw material, and closing material cycles go hand in hand with the industry's decarbonization plans. The subsequent panel discussion clearly showed great interest in alternative concepts for the steel and heat treatment industry.
