Report on the activities of the Joint Committee on Composite Materials in 2022

The reporting period of the Joint Committee "Composites" (GAV) focused on the organisation and support of the 23rd Symposium "Composites and Composite Materials" in July 2022 in Leoben (Austria) and the preparations for the 24th Symposium 2024 in Freiburg im Breisgau.

After the 23rd symposium "Composites and Material Composites" was postponed several times due to the Corona pandemic, it took place last year from 20 to 22 July 2022 under the technical conference management of Prof. Dr. Ralf Schledjewski at the Montanuniversity Leoben together with the "5th Intern. Hybrid 2022 - Materials and Structures" conference under the direction of Assoz.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.mont. Ewald Fauster, Montanuniversity Leoben; Prof. Dr. Joachim M. Hausmann, Leibniz-Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe GmbH, Kaiserslautern; Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel von Hehl, Universität Siegen and Prof. Dr. Kay André Weidenmann, Universität Augsburg.

The hybrid form of the event made it possible to include international speakers. The response to both conferences was very high on a national and international level. The numerous contributions to materials development, optimisation and production were very well received, as were the oral poster session and the accompanying company presentation. To prepare these, the GAV and Programme Committee members met several times via video link and in presence.

The selected scientific focal points (PMC, MMC, CMC, metal-ceramic composites, biomaterials, cellular materials, coating processes and materials, testing of materials / mechanical properties, joining and joining, fibres/oxide and non-oxide composites, processes and simulation, sustainability and metal-matrix composites) of the symposium recorded an outstanding response. Thus, 111 attractive lectures and posters were presented in Leoben, and the Best Paper Award and the Best Poster Award were offered.

The joint efforts of the GAV and Programme Committee members and the involvement of industrial partners and sponsors had a supportive and positive effect on the conference events.

Technology transfer was significantly promoted in the field of composites and material composites. By conveying the latest specialist knowledge and thanks to the synergy achieved between product manufacturers, material developers and material users, the 23rd "Composites and Material Composites" Symposium was once again able to impressively prove itself as an important scientific forum with a potential driving force for Germany as a business and science location.

At their GAV/PA meeting on 17 November 2022 in Freiburg am Breisgau, the GAV members welcomed the unreservedly implemented conference concept and also advocated the inclusion of oral poster presentations as a central conference element in the programme for the next event from 22 to 24 May 2024 in Freiburg i. B. under the conference management of Prof. Dr. Frank Balle.
