Twice a year, we all must go to the dentist for a check-up. For some, the very idea of it may give them goosebumps. When the time comes again, you will know that you are in good hands, thanks to our MatWerk colleague and DGM member, Prof. Dr. Klaus D. Jandt.

Prof. Dr. Jandt, Chair of Materials Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU Jena), is a leading expert in the field of biomaterials. His research focuses on the development and application of materials used in the medical field. This includes, for example, the research and development of an LED lamp with blue light for the photo-polymerisation of dental materials. Prof. Dr. Jandt's outstanding research in the field of oral biomaterials was recognised by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in June 2022 with the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award-Wilmer Souder Award. Prof. Dr Jandt is also experiencing a high reputation at the national level. In 2022, the DFG confirmed an interdisciplinary research training group initiated by Prof. Dr. Jandt at FSU Jena in the field of biomaterials. The Materials Science and Medicine Research Training Group (RTG) 2723 on material-microbe-microenvironments combines researchers from physics, chemistry, biology, clinical medicine, and microbiology.

This demonstrates the enormous social and economic importance of materials at the interface with biological systems. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Jandt, the DGM is organising the 7th European Symposium on Biomaterials and Related Areas from 03 to 04 May 2023. The hybrid conference on innovative biomaterials will take place in Weimar as well as online. The conference will focus on Structure and Properties of Biomaterials, Biological Response to Biomaterials and Biomaterials Applications. All information on the program, the internationally renowned plenary speakers and ticket booking can be found on the conference homepage.
