Dear members and friends of the German Materials Society e.V. (DGM),
We look back with inspiration at the second Steel Innovation Congress, which recently took place in Cologne from 24 to 26 October 2023. In this editorial, we would like to give you an insight into the highlights and achievements of this important event, which not only further strengthens our community but has also set significant impulses for future breakthroughs in steel technology, materials science and engineering.
Successful Combination of Tradition and Innovation
The interplay of the established Heat Treatment Congress with the young specialist conference Steel Innovation has created a synergy that combines freshness and experience. Dr. Till Schneiders, DGM Vice President, emphasized the importance of this combination by praising the platform as a hub for experts from industry and academia for pre-competitive exchange on innovative developments in the entire process chain of steel production and processing.
From Experiences to Insights
The premiere of the Steel Innovation Congress last year already established itself as the perfect counterpart to the Heat Treatment Congress by bringing complementary perspectives into the field. Spurred by the dynamic start-up momentum and the visible commitment of all participants, the decision was made to hold the second edition of Steel Innovation without delay this year. This year's success not only met expectations but reaffirmed the relevance of the conference for the industry.
Thematic Focus: A Step Towards the Future
This year's discussions revolved around key themes crucial for the future of the steel industry: sustainability, energy-saving, and digitalization. From strategies for decarbonization, through hydrogen effects and classic heat treatment topics to issues of materials testing and quality control, we have gained deep insights into the challenges and solutions that will shape the next phase of materials science innovation. The connection of a trade fair also offered an ideal platform for exchange between professionals and the presentation of product innovations.
Investment in the Future: Our Young Talent
Special attention was paid to the promotion of young professionals. The AWT also praised the Paul Riebensahm Prize, endowed with 2.000 euros, which awards the best presentation by a young scientist: Marcel Hesselmann M.Sc., Leibniz-IWT. In addition, initiatives such as the job fair and free participation opportunities for students and trainees provided important opportunities for professional qualification and orientation.
Looking Forward
We are now looking forward to the next chapters of the Steel Innovation Conference. Driven by the successes of the past and the challenges of the future, we are determined to further develop this platform. Our goal is to make a lasting contribution to the advancement of steel technology and materials science and engineering.
We would like to express our thanks to all participants, speakers, and the organizing team. Your commitment and contributions are the cornerstone of the success of this important event.
