Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider honored with the Federal Cross of Merit

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider, former president of the German Materials Society (DGM), was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in Stuttgart. The honor was presented by Science Minister Petra Olschowski, who praised Schneider's outstanding commitment to science and innovation.

As a member of the DGM since 1999, Prof. Schneider has had a significant impact, particularly during his presidency from 2021 to 2022. During this time, he has provided decisive impetus for the further development of materials science and engineering. His commitment to materialography and the visibility of materials science in research and industry have had a lasting impact on the field. Schneider has already been awarded the Roland Mitsche Prize and the “DGM Pioneer” for his achievements.

During his 14-year term as rector of Aalen University (2008-2022), Schneider expanded the university into one of the strongest research universities of applied sciences in Germany. He played a key role in the establishment of important research centers, including the innovation center INNO-Z and the Graduate Campus, and secured numerous funding projects at the state and federal level. He was also always concerned with research and the improvement of conditions for scientists at universities of applied sciences. His efforts contributed to the fact that universities in Baden-Württemberg were granted the right to award doctorates, an important step in strengthening the science location.

However, Schneider is not only known for his achievements as rector. His voluntary work on numerous scientific committees and in various institutions, including the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and the DGM, also demonstrates his close ties with the academic community. His ability to network science, teaching and business has earned him numerous accolades over the years. He is particularly valued as a visionary and strategic partner in the Ostwürttemberg region, which he has significantly advanced through his work.

In addition to his work at Aalen University, Schneider has always been an active scientist and researcher. After his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, he was a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo and worked in research at Bosch, among other things. His international experience and strong research background made him a sought-after consultant and expert in state and federal ministries, as well as in funding organizations such as the German Research Foundation (DFG).

We are very pleased that Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider will remain loyal to science even after his official retirement and will continue to be active in research projects at Aalen University. The award of the Federal Cross of Merit recognizes his outstanding achievements in science, education and innovation and represents a highlight of his impressive career.

The DGM warmly congratulates Prof. Schneider on this award and looks forward to many more years of good cooperation.
