Material Testing Under Hydrogen: Insights and Exchange in the Focus of the DGM Working Group

How does hydrogen affect the properties and safety of materials? This question was the focus of the meeting of the DGM working group (WG) on materials testing under hydrogen, which took place on 19 – 20 November at the Chair of Materials Testing Technology (WPT). With participants from industry and science, the event was a complete success – and impressively demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary exchange for the further development of sustainable technologies.

The increasing importance of hydrogen as an energy source of the future makes materials testing under hydrogen exposure a central topic. The working group “Materials Testing under Hydrogen Exposure” highlighted current challenges: How can materials be made more resistant? Which test methods provide the most precise results? In particular, the interactions between microstructure, material properties and the influences of hydrogen were the focus of attention.

Interdisciplinary Exchange
The research results presented complemented each other perfectly: Similar questions from different perspectives led to lively discussions and provided new impetus. Even outside of the official program – for example, during dinner together – there were lively conversations that further deepened the exchange.

Technologies of the Future
One focus of the meeting was the presentation of innovative measurement and testing techniques that are increasingly supported by artificial intelligence. These not only enable more precise analyses, but also help to make manufacturing processes more efficient and sustainable – a clear goal of the WPT professorship.

With exciting insights and strengthened networks, the participants look back on an inspiring meeting – and on the next steps to jointly master the challenges of materials testing under hydrogen influence.

A big thank you to all participants who enriched this event with their commitment and knowledge.
