Prof Aldo R. Boccaccini awarded the George Winter Prize of the European Society for Biomaterials

The European Society for Biomaterials (ESB) has awarded the prestigious George Winter Prize 2024 to Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Head of the Institute of Biomaterials at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, President of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) and a member of the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) for more than 30 years.

The George Winter Prize is awarded by the ESB to recognize, promote and reward outstanding research achievements in the field of biomaterials. Named after George Winter, a pioneer in biomaterials research, the award recognises individuals whose basic, experimental or clinical research has made a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

The award will be presented at this year's ESB Annual Conference, to be held in Turin, Italy, from 07 to 11 September 2025.

In his first reaction to the award, Prof Boccaccini was deeply moved:

It is true honor to be recognized in this way by the ESB community. I dedicate the award to all current and former members of my research group and to all collaborators worldwide who have accompanied me in an exciting biomaterials journey of almost 30 years. Many thanks!"

Prof Boccaccini's award highlights an impressive career spanning almost three decades of pioneering contributions to the development of innovative biomaterials. His work includes basic research, applied studies and international collaborations that bridge the gap between science and practice.

With the award of the George Winter Prize, Prof. Boccaccini joins a list of outstanding personalities in biomaterials research and helps to further emphasize the importance of this interdisciplinary field of research.

The DGM warmly congratulates its long-standing member on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to continuing to benefit from his pioneering contributions to materials science and in particular to the field of biomaterials.
