Hybrid Materials and Structures: Interdisciplinary Exchange at DGM

On 22 November, the DGM Expert Committee "Hybrid Materials and Structures" met for the first time at its founding location, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne-Porz. It was here that Prof. Dr. Joachim Hausmann, now at the Leibniz Institute for Composite Materials GmbH (IVW), founded the committee in 2012.

Then as now, the aim is to promote the professional dialog between different disciplines of materials science. At the meeting at DLR, research progress was presented and discussed in 8 lectures from different institutes. A guided tour through the laboratories of the DLR Institute of Materials Research rounded off the program.

According to the members of the expert committee, hybrid materials and structures are materially linked combinations of different material classes, e.g. fiber composites with metals for lightweight construction applications. This makes it clear that expertise is required not only in the field of the materials used, but also in joining and production technology. This is where the technical committee provides a suitable platform for exchange. Many members of the technical committee have been involved for a long time and exchange information on a regular basis.

The two chairmen of the committee, Prof. Joachim Hausmann and Dr. Daniel Hülsbusch, are already looking forward to the next meeting and the continued interdisciplinary dialogue in this forward-looking field of research. New participants are welcome to join the lively exchange within the group.
