New Developments in Plasma Spectrometry: Successful EWCPS 2025 in Berlin

The 20th European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry (EWCPS 2025) took place in Berlin and online from 02 to 07 March 2025. The conference brought together leading scientists from around the world to discuss recent developments and challenges in the field of plasma spectrometry.

With 486 participants from 35 countries and more than 380 scientific contributions, EWCPS 2025 provided a broad platform for professional exchange and networking between research and industry.

Interactive Short Courses as a Prelude

Even before the official start of the conference, seven interactive short courses were held, which were very well received. The topics covered key aspects of modern plasma spectrometry:

  • Isotopic Analysis
  • The Rise of Microwave Induced Plasmas: Fundamentals and Applications
  • Single Particle and Single Cell Analysis using ICP-MS
  • High Precision and Accuracy Isotopic Analysis by MC-ICP-MS for the Production of Isotopic CRMs
  • Speciation/Metallomics
  • The Art of Evaluating Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis
  • Elemental and Isotopic Imaging at the Nanometer Scale

The hands-on approach allowed participants to deepen their knowledge and gain valuable insights into the latest methodological developments.

Top-Class Plenary and Keynote Speeches

The scientific program included a total of 179 lectures, 152 poster presentations and seven after-lunch seminars. A highlight of EWCPS 2025 were the six plenary lectures that highlighted key topics in plasma spectrometry. The speakers included:

  • Dr. Heidi Goenaga-InfanteParticle Metrology: Are We There Yet?
  • A/Prof. Gawain McCollA model systems examination of iron homeostasis over lifetime
  • Univ.Prof. Dr.techn. Thomas ProhaskaIsotopes don’t lie
  • Prof. James RanvilleSingle Particle ICP-MS: Past, Present, and Future
  • Prof. Dr. Markus RexFrozen at the North Pole – environmental research at the epicenter of climate change
  • Prof. Dr. Dirk SchaumlöffelElemental imaging offers fascinating insights into the micro and nanoworld

The program also featured 16 keynote lectures in which leading researchers presented new methods, analytical techniques and applications of plasma spectrometry.

Another highlight was the Heritage Talk by Prof. Diane Beauchemin, who reflected on the historical development and future prospects of plasma spectrometry in her presentation “An ongoing journey with ICP spectrometry: a beautiful road (un beau chemin)”.

Diverse Industry Contributions and Networking Opportunities

The conference not only provided a platform for scientific presentations, but also for exchanges with industry. 10 company presentations enabled leading companies to present their latest developments. Companies from the fields of material characterization and analytics such as Agilent Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific, PerkinElmer, Shimadzu Europa GmbH, ESI Elemental Service & Instruments GmbH, Nu Instruments & Spectro Ametek, TOFWERK, Advion Interchim Scientific, Inorganic Ventures, ANALYTIK JENA GMBH+Co. KG, Spetec GmbH, AHF analysentechnik AG, LTB Lasertechnik Berlin GmbH, LECO EUROPE B.V, Royal Society of Chemistry (JAAS), Anton Paar Germany GmbH, Radom Instruments, Milestone™ Srl, LabKings B.V, CEM GmbH, AtomTrace a.s., Hamamatsu Photonics Deutschland GmbH, Soliton Laser-und Messtechnik GmbH and National Measurement Laboratory were represented as sponsors and exhibitors. The intensive dialog between science and industry promoted the transfer of knowledge and the development of new cooperations.

Participants also took advantage of opportunities to network outside of the official program. In particular, the conference dinner at the Wasserwerk Berlin and the Hot Plasma Party at the Arena Club Berlin provided a relaxed atmosphere for informal discussions.

Focus On the Promotion of Young Talent

A central concern of EWCPS 2025 was the promotion of young scientists. In this context, outstanding poster contributions were awarded. The award winners were:

  • 1st place: Dominik Wippermann (M.Sc.), Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon GmbH
  • 2nd place: Angela de la Rosa-Díaz (M.Sc.), Universidad de Oviedo
  • 3rd place: Dr. Katharina Kronenberg, Karl-Franzens-University Graz

Thanks to the Organizing Team

The successful implementation of EWCPS 2025 would not have been possible without the commitment of the Program Committee. Special thanks go to the chairperson Priv.-Doz. Dr. Björn Meermann from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), the Vice-Chair Prof. Dr. Tanja Schwerdtle from the Max Rubner Institute and all members of the Program and Scientific Committee.

A Glimpse Into the Future

The overwhelmingly positive response to EWCPS 2025 demonstrates the importance of the conference for the international professional community. Until 31 March 2025, all participants have the opportunity to view all presentations online on the event platform in order to deepen their knowledge. In addition, the conference photo gallery is now available on the website.

EWCPS 2025 once again demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary exchange and the close connection between science and industry for the further development of plasma spectrometry.
