Call for Abstracts: Metallography Conference 2025 returns to the Ruhr Area

The 59th Metallography Conference will be held 08 – 10 October 2025 at Ruhr University Bochum – a traditional venue with a strong focus on materials development. Colleagues are now invited to submit contributions from research, teaching and practice. The deadline for submitting abstracts is 31 March 2025.

The 2025 Metallography Conference takes the community back to where metallurgical expertise and industrial development have always been closely linked: the Ruhr region. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum – founded in the heart of the former center of the coal and steel industry – will host the 59th Metallography Conference – Materialography 2025, from 08 to 10 October 2025. The Call for Abstracts is now open.

Experts from academia, industry and testing practice are invited to present their current work - in the form of lectures, posters or oral posters. Early career scientists are especially encouraged to participate with their own contributions.

Thematic Diversity and Current Focus

This year's conference will cover a wide range of metallographic topics. Topics include:

  • Preparation techniques for all classes of materials
  • Microscopic characterization of material structures
  • Digital image processing and quantitative microstructure analysis
  • Artificial intelligence in materialography
  • 3D microstructure analysis and tomography
  • Failure analysis and quality assurance
  • Materialography of additively manufactured materials

In addition to these focal points, the exchange of practical experience – whether from everyday laboratory work, industrial quality assurance, or university teaching – is expressly encouraged.

Conference With a Regional Reference and Historical Setting

The return to Bochum follows the last conference in the Ruhr area in 2004. The choice of location is no coincidence: the Ruhr University, as the first newly founded full university in North Rhine-Westphalia, symbolizes technological change based on the strength of the mining industry. The social program also follows this theme: The welcome evening on 08 October will take place at the German Mining Museum in Bochum – including a guided tour of the demonstration mine.

Submission, Organization and Exhibition

Abstracts can be submitted until 31 March 2025. Booking of participation is only required after acceptance of the abstract. The conference will be hybrid, with presentations and an exhibition both onsite and online. Companies and institutions have the opportunity to present themselves with a booth or digital presence at the accompanying exhibition.
