Professor Christian Motz opened the event by reflecting on the department’s development. As early as 1952 — just four years after Saarland University was founded — the first metallurgy chair was established, a precursor to today's department. After briefly outlining the current chairs, Professor Motz presented a recent initiative: a joint project with the Systems Engineering department titled 'Circular Saar', which aims to strengthen the regional circular economy in collaboration with local companies. This initiative closely aligns with the objectives of the DGM Hub Saar. Dr Sebastian Slawik, DGM’s scientific officer, then introduced the Hub concept before the official cooperation agreement was signed.
The alumni meeting began with personal reflections from Dr. Michaela Ewen and Dr Marius Gipperich. They reminisced about their time as students and discussed their current professional roles. A celebratory reception then took place, providing ample opportunity for networking and informal discussion. The afternoon concluded with a guided tour of the Fraunhofer IZFP and a relaxed get-together on the institute’s rooftop terrace.
The event is planned to continue next year with the clear aim of expanding the alumni network, attracting more participants and establishing the exchange more firmly. Warm thanks go to the speakers and to the University Society for their support.
*DGM Hubs are regional contact points for individuals active in materials science and engineering, whether in education, academia, teaching or industry. They provide a space for professional networking, encourage cross-institutional collaboration, and link local initiatives with the nationwide DGM network. They represent increased visibility and an opportunity to pool resources and launch new projects for each region.
