Reuse in Steel Construction: Expert Committee on Circular Materials Discusses Current Approaches

At its online meeting on 13 June 2025, the Expert Committee on Circular Materials of the German Society for Materials Science focused on practical approaches to the reuse of steel in construction. The presentation by Dr.-Ing. Helen Bartsch provided in-depth insights and met with great interest among the participants.

The Expert Committee Circular Materials continued its series of thematic online meetings on 13 June 2025. From 12 noon to 1 p.m., participants discussed current research and practical examples of circular use of materials in construction via Zoom. The meeting was opened by Prof. Dr. Gesa Beck and Dr. Alexander Gramlich, who emphasized the importance of an exchange between science and practice.

The central element of the meeting was the presentation by Dr. Helen Bartsch, senior engineer at the Institute for Steel Construction at RWTH Aachen University. Under the title “ReUse in Steel Construction,” Dr. Bartsch presented innovative approaches and concrete examples of how steel components can be reused in a meaningful way after their first life cycle. She showed that, in addition to ecological advantages, the focus is primarily on design and logistical challenges, which are being addressed through targeted research.

The presentation was very well received. In the discussion that followed, numerous participants took the opportunity to ask questions and contribute their own perspectives. The technical exchange underscored the relevance of the topic for a more sustainable construction industry and the role of materials science and engineering in the implementation of circular strategies.

Outlook:
Due to the high level of participation and positive feedback, the expert committee will continue the series in the near future. The next online meeting will take place on 22 August 2025. There, Theresa Aigner from Fraunhofer IZM will provide insights into current developments relating to the digital product passport.
