With a targeted range of training courses, AI MSE 2025 is providing impetus for research, application, and further education in the field of artificial intelligence in materials science in the run-up to the conference. Three sessions will address key topics that are just as relevant for scientific practice as they are for strategic considerations in research and innovation planning.
The event kicks off with the Online Training Course “Mit eigenen Daten chatten – mit KI zum technologischen Wissensvorsprung”, which will take place in German from 10 to 14 November 2025. In five modules, participants will learn how to use large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT responsibly and effectively from the technical basics to practical application with their own domain-specific data sets. Legal aspects and the reflective handling of uncertainties will also be in focus. The aim is to develop viable strategies for knowledge acquisition and support for R&D processes.
On 17 November 2025, two compact in-person and online tutorials will continue at Ruhr University Bochum:
Tutorial 1: “Machine Learning Applications in Materials Science & Engineering”
Dr.-Ing. Martin Müller (MECS) will provide an application-oriented overview of AI methods in materials engineering from materials development and microstructure analysis to surrogate modeling. Typical data requirements, methods, and current challenges will be discussed.
Tutorial 2: “Compute Resources for Deep Learning in a Public Context: Options and How to Use Them”
Dr. Tim Dahmen (DFKI) will present concrete options for efficiently utilizing computing capacities for deep learning applications in public research. In addition to cloud solutions, virtualized in-house setups and national high-performance computers will also be examined, including technical requirements, cost overviews, and access options.
In parallel with the training program, AI MSE 2025 invites participants to showcase their own research: Poster submissions for presentation on site in Bochum are being accepted until 01 October 2025. This gives researchers from academia and industry the opportunity to share their work with the community and help shape the dialogue on AI in materials science – in person or virtually.
