Mining up Close: Welcome Evening for the Metallography Conference at the German Mining Museum

The 59th Metallography Conference, which will take place in Bochum on 08 – 10 October 2025, will kick off by taking participants directly underground: The event will begin with a reception at the German Mining Museum in Bochum in a convivial atmosphere. At the same time, the deadline for submitting poster contributions is approaching – researchers have until 24 September 2025, to register and present their latest findings.

Kick-off at the German Mining Museum
To kick off the conference, the German Mining Museum in Bochum invites participants to a welcome evening at the museum restaurant “Kumpels.” There, participants will have the opportunity to arrive in a relaxed atmosphere and engage in initial conversations. After the official welcome, there will be an opportunity to take part in a 40-minute guided tour of the exhibition mine.

If the weather is good, the museum's winding tower will also be open – a short climb is rewarded with a panoramic view of the Ruhr area. The tours start at different times to minimize waiting times.

A Cozy End to the Evening at “Kumpels”
After the tours, the evening will come to a convivial close at “Kumpels.” Food and drinks are to be paid for individually; no additional registration for dinner is necessary. As places in the restaurant are limited, it is recommended that you indicate your participation in the welcome evening and the guided tour when registering for the conference.

Poster Contributions: Submission Deadline on 24 September 2025
In addition to the successful kick-off, the technical agenda of the conference is already taking shape. Poster contributions can be submitted until September 24, 2025. We are looking for current research results and practical work from all areas of metallography and materials characterization—related and innovative approaches are also expressly welcome.

The following topics are suitable for submission:

  • Preparation techniques for all material classes
  • Microscopic characterization of material structures
  • Digital image processing and quantitative microstructure analysis
  • Artificial intelligence in materialography
  • Tomography and 3D microstructure analysis
  • Microstructural investigations for research, quality assurance, and damage analysis
  • Materialography of additively manufactured materials

Further information on registration, contributions, and the program is available on the event website.
