Three Professional Associations Join Forces: AWT, DGM, and VDEh Commit to Cooperation in the Joint Committee on Materials Technology Steel

The Working Group for Heat Treatment and Materials Technology (AWT), the German Society for Materials Science (DGM), and the Steel Institute VDEh (VDEh) are strengthening their cooperation: In the future, the three technical and scientific associations will pool their expertise in the Joint Committee for Materials Technology Steel.

The merger builds on the collaboration between AWT and DGM, which began in 2021, and now includes the central voice of steel manufacturers. The goal is to increase knowledge sharing throughout the entire value chain and address current challenges in steel materials technology together.

Led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Krupp and Dr.-Ing. Frank Hippenstiel, the committee addresses pre-competitive issues, including alloy design, heat treatment, surface technology, and microstructure-property relationships. These topics are explored through basic and practical research and development projects.

Close cooperation among the three organizations creates new synergies, supporting the development of innovative material solutions, strengthening the exchange of expertise between industry and science, and actively accompanying the transformation of the steel industry.

Experts from research and industry are invited to contribute to the committee's work. The next meeting, which will take place on 30 October 2025, at the Steel Institute VDEh in Düsseldorf, will be an opportunity to do so.
