Bilateral Research Projects as an Integral Part of DFG Funding
The annual ANR-DFG calls for proposals are firmly anchored in the DFG's funding program. Researchers from both countries can submit their project ideas in a joint application. The DFG will take the lead for the 2026 call for proposals: The complete application will first be submitted to the DFG, which will be responsible for review and selection. At the same time, identical documents must be uploaded to the ANR, supplemented by administrative and financial information. There is no preliminary application procedure.
Focus On Equal Opportunities and Diversity
The DFG attaches great importance to equal opportunities and diversity. Applications from researchers of all genders, identities, cultural and social backgrounds, career stages, and from people with disabilities or chronic illnesses are expressly welcome. In view of the thematic focus, female scientists in particular are encouraged to apply.
Good Scientific Practice as a Prerequisite
Funding will only be awarded to institutions that have implemented the guidelines for ensuring good scientific practice in a legally binding manner. Responsibility for this lies with the respective institute management. A timely review of implementation is recommended to avoid delays. Detailed information can be found on the DFG portal on research integrity.
Deadlines and Submission via Elan and ANR Portal
Applications can be submitted via the DFG's elan portal from 17 November 2025 – 14 January 2026. All applicants on the German side need an active, current elan account, which must be set up or updated by 07 January 2026, at the latest. Submissions to the ANR must be made by 15 January 2026 (5 p.m.), using the same acronym and identical documents. Detailed information is available on the ANR website, including the generic call for proposals 2026 and the specific ANR-DFG annex.
Framework Conditions and Funding Criteria
Researchers can find comprehensive information, application templates, and the respective conditions of participation on the DFG website for the call for proposals. Subject-specific contact persons can be found here. Commercial partners cannot be involved. Project durations are up to three years, funding decisions are expected in October 2026, and the project start is planned for early 2027.
