Metallography Meeting of the DGM Regional Working Group at fem in Schwäbisch Gmünd

At the end of September 2025, the working group “Aalen/Stuttgart Metallography Meeting” of the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) met at the Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry (fem) in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The focus was on current developments in nanoindentation and hardness measurement techniques, as well as on professional exchange between research and industry.

At the end of September, the “Aalen/Stuttgart Metallography Meeting” working group of the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) held its latest meeting at the Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry (fem) in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The event was jointly organized by Gaby Ketzer-Raichle and Karin Pfeffer (fem) and brought together experts from academia and industry for a day of practical insights and scientific discussion.

The day began with a hands-on workshop on nanoindentation, led by Ude Hangen (Bruker Nano Analytics). Participants gained insight into the latest developments in the technique and had the opportunity to measure their own samples.

In the afternoon, the meeting continued with a series of technical presentations. Ude Hangen opened with a detailed overview of nanoindentation methods, followed by Gaby Ketzer-Raichle, who demonstrated practical applications of micro- and nanoindentation. The meeting concluded with Martin Balzer (fem), who presented on hardness measurements on rough surfaces.

The working group “Aalen/Stuttgart Metallography Meeting” is an open network of currently around 160 professionals in Baden-Württemberg working in the field of metallography and materials testing. Meetings are held once or twice a year, usually on Friday evenings at Aalen University or in the Stuttgart area, featuring a technical presentation followed by informal exchange among colleagues.

The DGM would like to express its sincere thanks to everyone involved – especially Karin Pfeffer and Gaby Ketzer-Raichle for organizing this successful meeting, to the speakers for their valuable contributions, and to all participants for their active engagement and lively discussions.
