Understanding Metallurgy – From Structures to Solutions

Metals are the backbone of modern technologies – from the energy and automotive industries to medical technology. Understanding their structures, properties, and processing methods lays the foundation for reliable products and sustainable developments. The DGM training course “Einführung in die Metallkunde” will take place on 10 – 13 March 2026, in Darmstadt and provides engineers and technicians with the practical knowledge they need to make informed decisions about material selection and application.

The program of the training course “Introduction to Metallurgy for Engineers and Technicians” has a modular structure and combines basic principles with practical application. Participants first learn the basic concepts of bonds, crystal lattices, and microstructures. Building on this, their knowledge of alloy formation, phase diagrams, and ZTU diagrams is deepened and supplemented by application-oriented aspects such as strength, hardness, and toughness. A special focus is placed on the role of heat treatments and forming processes, which significantly determine the properties of a material.

Both unalloyed and alloyed steels as well as aluminum, nickel, copper, magnesium, and titanium alloys are covered. This provides a comprehensive overview of the metal groups relevant to industry and their special characteristics. Practical exercises in mechanical and thermal testing, microscopy, and working with materials databases ensure that the knowledge gained can be directly transferred to everyday professional life. In addition, the event offers the opportunity to discuss specific issues with experts.

The training course is aimed not only at scientists, engineers, and technicians from research, development, or manufacturing, but also at specialists from quality control, sales, and related fields. The following applies to everyone: a solid foundation in metallurgy is key to competently evaluating materials, avoiding manufacturing defects, and ensuring long-term product quality. Register here and join us in Darmstadt in March.
