Hybrid Materials and Structures 2020: 2 - 3 - 52 - 100

Two days, three exciting plenary lectures, 52 further presentations, around 100 participants - one "4th Hybrid Materials and Structures 2020". The conference, which was held as a webinar, was very well received both in terms of content and organisation, and thus serves the German Materials Society (DGM) as yet another blueprint for future events held over the internet.

The two-day international conference (April, 28th to 29th, 2020) chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim M. Hausmann (Institute for Composite Materials (IVW), Kaiserslautern), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marc Siebert (PFH - Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen), Dr.-Ing. Axel von Hehl (Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering - IWT, Bremen) as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kay André Weidenmann (Institute for Materials Resource Management, University of Augsburg) distinguished itself in several areas through high quality. In an effort to promote scientific exchange, three detailed plenary lectures led the wide array of presentations, which covered the entire thematic spectrum in dealing with hybrid structures and materials.

"Like previous events, the Hybrid 2020 once again provided an interesting insight into possible applications of tomorrow. I am sure that we will be able to transfer and use some of the technologies for material hybrids presented in the future in series applications," commented Maximilian Koerdt (Brose Fahrzeugteile SE & Co.), adding with a wink: "In addition to the participants' workrooms, the content could also be vividly conveyed through this unusual type of conference.“

Marc Kirchhoff (TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH) also found the event, which was conducted as a two-way web conference, to be a valuable experience: "The format as a 'virtual conference' was exciting to experience and offers a lot of potential for the future.“

"A new conference setup with a lot of new experiences for me personally. I joined presentations as well as gave one myself. So from a technical point of view everything worked fine and an online conference is a good chance to share information and presentations", added Simon Oberhauser (InnCoa GmbH), but also pointed out a social aspect: "What I was missing is the networking in the coffee break and more interaction between the audience and respective speakers.“

In order to cushion this virtually, the DGM had set up a discussion forum for breaks and in-depth technical discussions, in which the conference participants could network with each other. This medium was well-received and used a lot, so that the personal contact did in fact happen – yet on another level.
