Moderator:
Dr. Tim Dahmen, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize as well as to significantly accelerate research, development and innovation in materials and materials-related manufacturing. The application of AI to Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a highly interdisciplinary endeavor and a rapidly growing field that has already achieved significant progress.

After a brief introduction to the history of AI and machine learning (ML) and covering some AI/ML basics, this course provides an overview of the diverse application fields in MSE. Topics covered, amongst others, include materials discovery & design, ML for materials and microstructure characterization, predictive maintenance, and surrogate models. In doing so, the value-added that can be generated by AI/ML will be elaborated, but at the same time the challenges that still await us in the application of AI/ML in MSE will be presented.
