Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize and significantly accelerate research, development, and innovation in materials and materials-related manufacturing. Applying AI to materials science and engineering (MSE) is a highly interdisciplinary endeavor and a rapidly growing field that has already made significant progress.
After providing an introduction to the history of AI and machine learning (ML) and covering some AI/ML fundamentals, this course will offer an overview of the various application areas in MSE. Topics covered include materials discovery and design, machine learning (ML) for materials and microstructure characterization, and surrogate models. The course addresses the added value that AI/ML can provide, the approaches and architectures used, the required data basis, and the challenges that still lie ahead in the application of AI/ML.
