The CellMAT conference series covers cellular materials comprehensively for all material classes including composite materials. A multitude of manufacturing techniques and processes exists depending on the respective material and the final shape of the product. Nevertheless, regarding the characterization of cellular materials, the key questions are commonly very similar and less dependent on the material itself or its processing.

Of utmost importance is the characterization of the porosity within a cellular material, which is, in some cases, present on different hierarchical dimensional levels. This requires various characterization techniques depending on the pore size distribution and the pore connectivity within the cellular material. Typical examples, among others, are micro computed tomography, mercury intrusion porometry and gas adsorption measurements.

The porosity highly influences the properties of cellular materials, e. g. the mechanical strength, the conductivity for heat and electric current, or the absorption behavior for mechanical load or electromagnetic waves, significantly. Thus, a reliable analysis of the porosity and its correlation with relevant properties of cellular materials is an inevitable prequisite for a thorough characterization of porous materials.

In this workshop an introduction to the most important characterization techniques for relevant microstructural features and physical properties of cellular materials will be given, together with some general instructions to avoid possible pitfalls in data collection and evaluation. The workshop is explicitly aimed at young researchers, graduate students, postdocs and new entrants from industry.

Prior to the workshop, participants are encouraged to provide information about their research topics and specific problems in porosity and properties characterization, which will be included in the discussion during our interactive lecture.
