Evening Program Highlights
Historical Experiments by the Otto von Guericke Society

As part of the CellMAT 2024 evening program on 28 November, the Otto von Guericke Society will bring history to life with demonstrations of groundbreaking scientific experiments that highlight the principles of atmospheric pressure and vacuum technology. These captivating experiments offer a glimpse into the legacy of Otto von Guericke’s pioneering work.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

1. Shooting with the “Windbüchse”
Witness the ingenuity of early vacuum technology as the “Windbüchse” is aimed, loaded, and prepared for action. After evacuating the air from the barrel and sealing it with thin disks, the pressure release causes air to rush in, propelling the projectile toward its target with impressive force.

2. Tug-of-War with the small ”Magdeburger Halbkugel”
Experience the power of atmospheric pressure firsthand in this interactive experiment. Participants will try to pull apart the small "Magdeburger Halbkugel”, held together solely by external air pressure after evacuation. More participants may join the tug-of-war as the challenge intensifies, demonstrating the remarkable strength of atmospheric forces.

3. Can Implosion Experiment
Marvel at the dramatic implosion of a metal can, showcasing the effects of atmospheric pressure. As air is evacuated from the can using a vacuum pump, the surrounding atmospheric pressure causes the can to collapse spectacularly, providing a powerful visual representation of these forces.

These historical demonstrations promise to be both educational and entertaining. They offer a unique way to celebrate Otto von Guericke's scientific heritage. Don’t miss this engaging journey into the history of science!
