Berlin
The heart of Berlin's government district is the Reichstag building with its iconic glass dome. Visitors can tour the Reichstag and see the roof terrace which affords fantastic views over the city – but remember to register in advance. Nearby is the equally famous Brandenburg Gate, one of Berlin's most photographed landmarks which stands at the top of Unter den Linden, a tree-lined avenue packed with historic buildings. South of the Brandenburg Gate is Berlin's moving Holocaust Memorial; 2,700 concrete columns arranged in rows. The Reichstag also overlooks the east end of the city's Tiergarten park where you can enjoy food and drink at one of the many beer gardens.
Visit WebsiteA unique ensemble of buildings on Spreeinsel (Spree Island) in the heart of Berlin. It encompasses five large Berlin museums built under the Prussian rulers as well as a reception and exhibition building, the James Simon Gallery, opened in 2019.
Visit WebsiteSince reunification, what used to be a wasteland with the Berlin Wall running through it has become a completely new neighbourhood. It’s a must for anyone visiting Berlin, because there are restaurants, cinemas, theatres, shopping centres and modern architecture. The term Potsdamer Platz is an imprecise one. Actually, it’s only the square next to Leipziger Platz, but Berliners have come to refer to the whole area as Potsdamer Platz.
Visit WebsiteAt 1316 metres long, the open-air art gallery on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is the longest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still in existence. Immediately after the wall came down, 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the East Side Gallery, and it officially opened as an open air gallery on 28 September 1990. Just over a year later, it was given protected memorial status.
Visit WebsiteThe Berlin curry sausage dish, or Currywurst, is German fast food with flair. Take one typically German smoked sausage, boil it, fry it, then serve it sliced with spiced and curry flavoured tomato sauce and a side of chips. Berlin invents the dish just after World War II, and it rapidly becomes a Berlin institution, and a city favourite. Sold in fast food restaurants, kiosks or in diners across the city, the Currywurst is a typical Berliner snack.
