Welcome in Aalen

Aalen is located in the eastern part of Baden-Württemberg, at the heart of the Ostwürttemberg region, and has a population of around 80,000. Covering an area of approximately 146 km², it is one of the larger municipalities in the state. As a medium-sized center of supra-regional importance, Aalen impressively combines historical heritage, industrial strength, and close-to-nature living.

Aalen’s roots go back to Roman times: the former cavalry fort “Ala II Flavia” was part of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is impressively documented today in the Limes Museum. This long history of settlement continues to shape the city’s cultural identity.

Economically, Aalen has established itself as a powerful hub for technology. Mechanical engineering, the optics industry, and automation technology particularly define the city’s industrial profile. With Aalen University of Applied Sciences, the city hosts a respected academic institution with a strong practical focus that actively promotes research and innovation and contributes to securing skilled labor in the region.

Aalen also stands out in terms of quality of life: nestled between the Swabian Jura and the forests of the Albtrauf, the city offers a wide range of outdoor activities – from hiking and cycling to winter sports and thermal spas. The city’s cultural life is enriched by theaters, museums, festivals, and concerts. An active civic community, sustainable urban development, and strong educational and childcare services make Aalen an attractive place for families as well.
