Germany is part of the Schengen area, so which documents you need depends on your nationality. The Federal Foreign Office (auswaertiges-amt.de) publishes the full country lists and a directory of German missions worldwide.

EU / EEA / Switzerland

A valid identity card or passport. No visa and no registration needed.
Visa-free countries

The USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and others. A passport valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.
Schengen visa

All other nationalities. Apply at the German embassy or consulate responsible for you, well before the conference.

Whether your institution needs confirmation that you attended or your embassy asks for paperwork, you create the right letter yourself in the online registration system.

Pick the recipient and address from your profile and the PDF is generated straight away. A copy comes by email, and every letter you create stays in your account.
