Lightweight construction with advanced monolithic or hybrid materials is an imperative requirement for sustainable mobility on the road, by rail, and in the air. Therefore, the continuous development of these materials is necessary to meet the customers' future demands regarding their vehicles.
We are currently in the process of a transition from vehicles powered by petroleum products to those powered by electricity. Initially, there was an assumption that the importance of lightweight construction would diminish due to the recovery of energy through recuperation. However, this is not the case. Lightweighting through material and system integration plays a significant role in the development of vehicles for road, rail, and air, as reduced weight directly impacts the vehicle's maximum range, which is a strong selling point. Therefore, all monolithic or hybrid lightweight materials remain highly relevant today, and the further development of properties and functionalization is mandatory. Composition, processing, and thermal treatment determine the range of properties of new advanced lightweight materials. These can be the classic light metals like aluminum, magnesium, or titanium as well as high-strength steels, polymers, and the broad field of hybrid and cellular materials. As part of Materials Week 2021, the topic "Lightweight Design with Advanced Materials" will present the latest developments of these materials and their application areas, offering congress participants an insight into the future-oriented field of lightweight materials.
