Microscopy methods today can generate a flood of research data that is non-trivial to handle and analyze. Similarly, many simulation methods can easily produce quite a few terabytes of data. Exploiting this data is a major challenge. At the same time, however, in addition to these "big data" problems, many situations exist where the sheer volume of data is not the problem, but documenting it through metadata, setting up an end-to-end workflow, or analyzing the data is non-trivial.
