The working group In situ 2D and 3D Characterization focuses on investigating the progression of processes and phenomena directly at the location of their occurrence under applied loads within the scanning electron microscope. The types of applied loads range from mechanical and thermal to combinations of various loading conditions. Central topics include deformation and damage mechanisms, as well as processes such as phase transformations and recrystallization. In particular, the kinetics of these processes can be captured through the various approaches of in situ testing in the scanning electron microscope.
A key objective of the working group is to consolidate the diverse activities in this field and foster intensive exchange of experience both among research institutions and with equipment manufacturers. The group sees itself as a platform for work carried out in large-chamber SEMs—allowing investigations up to component geometry—as well as for classical SEM studies focused on understanding deformation and damage mechanisms and their kinetics.
The group meets annually for a 1.5-day event to present current research findings and to jointly seek solutions to a range of technical challenges.
