The DGM Expert Committee Materials in Energy Systems addresses materials and functional materials for energy conversion, transport and storage. Its focus covers materials development, manufacturing and application across different material classes.

The committee brings together expertise in materials science and materials engineering from universities, research institutions and industry. It considers the path from new energy materials and material systems to industrial application.

The committee considers materials for converting renewable energy sources into electricity and useful heat, as well as approaches to improving the efficiency of photocatalytic energy conversion.

Electrical and thermal transport place different demands on materials.

New materials for conductors, including superconductors, insulation materials and heat-dissipating materials are discussed. The security and efficiency of energy grids are important considerations.

Energy storage

Material systems for batteries and latent heat storage.

The focus includes material systems and technical systems for electrical and thermal energy storage. Topics cover batteries, latent heat storage and their local or large-scale application.

Economic, large-scale production is a bottleneck for new materials with application potential. The committee discusses interdisciplinary approaches to the production, combination and application of suitable materials and material systems.

02 · Collaboration

Exchange between research and industry

The Expert Committee brings together materials scientists, engineers, physicists and chemists from universities and research centres with representatives from industry. This includes manufacturers and users as well as companies producing feedstock materials, equipment and systems.

Meetings and workshops provide a forum for discussing trends, technical challenges and new materials developments. Exchange across material classes and disciplines supports transfer into industrial application and the initiation of joint research and development projects.

Converting energy from renewable sources, transporting it and storing it place demanding requirements on materials and material systems. Energy savings also depend on innovative materials. The development, production and application of suitable materials and functional materials are therefore central tasks in energy systems.

The scope ranges from thermal and photocatalytic materials to electrical energy storage systems and materials for the electrical energy industry. Electrical energy transport requires conductors, including superconductors, insulation materials and heat-dissipating materials. Further topics include batteries, latent heat storage, and material systems for electrical and thermal energy storage as well as electrical and thermal energy transport.

A major challenge is the economic and large-scale production of materials developed in basic research that have application potential. This calls for interdisciplinary approaches to the production, combination and application of suitable materials. Their interaction in functionally appropriate technical systems is equally important.

The Expert Committee promotes the exchange of current knowledge and brings together specialists from science and industry in meetings and workshops. New trends, open challenges and the transfer from basic research to industrial application are central topics.
