In 1958, the German Materials Society (DGM), the German Physical Society (DPG) and the German Iron and Steel Association (VDEh) formed a "Working Group on Metal and Materials Physics", whose task is to foster cooperation between scientists working in this field in Germany and to convey interest in and knowledge of metal and materials physics to other specialist circles.
