Materials

From raw-material preparation through evaluation, characterisation, and qualification, the focus is on suitable materials and traceable properties.
Process Control
Data preparation, monitoring, and process control considered together.
PBF-LB/M, PBF-EB/M, DED, and binder jetting are considered together with data preparation, sensors, monitoring, and data management.
Component Behaviour
Understanding component properties through process and material.
The focus includes simulation, distortion, residual stresses, microstructure, and defects, as well as the relationships between process, material, and properties.
Quality
Quality assurance extends to post-processing.
In-process quality assurance, testing strategies, heat treatment, and post-processing are considered across the full process chain.
The committee brings together experts from research and industry, including raw-material and equipment manufacturers, producers, and users. Technical experience, open questions, and discussion across the additive manufacturing process chain are at the centre of its work.
Exchange with related VDI and DVS committees, groups involved in standardisation, and the Fraunhofer Alliance for Generative Manufacturing complements the committee’s work. The committee prepares its own conferences and supports further events.
In additive manufacturing, components are built layer by layer from digital 3D and CAD data. These processes open up new options for complex geometries, functionally integrated structures, and the use of different materials. At the same time, materials, processes, post-processing, and testing must be coordinated.
The committee therefore addresses microstructure, defects, residual stresses, and distortion, as well as simulation, monitoring, process data, and in-process quality assurance. Different process routes are discussed, including laser- and electron-beam powder bed processes, DED, and binder jetting.
The committee’s work is complemented by exchange with related VDI and DVS committees, groups involved in standardisation, and the Fraunhofer Alliance for Generative Manufacturing. Alongside preparing its own conferences, the committee supports further events.
