The DGM Expert Committee Drawing brings together activities relating to the drawing of metallic materials. Representatives from industry and university institutions address general and fundamental questions in the field.

The work is organised in the Working Groups Wire and Rod and Tubes and Profiles. They meet approximately every six months, and present their activities and main results at the committee’s annual meetings.

The discussion considers requirements for geometric and material tolerances and properties, as well as economic aspects.

Material selection and heat treatment are part of the technical scope.

The material spectrum includes metals such as copper, aluminium, steel, and magnesium, as well as hybrid combinations such as metal/polymer or different metals.

Process understanding

Tribology and digitalisation

Tribology in drawing technology, digitalisation, and Industry 4.0 are further topics.

These topics complement the consideration of materials, equipment, and process control in drawing technology.

Working groups with distinct technical perspectives

The technical work is divided between the Working Groups Wire and Rod and Tubes and Profiles. Their approximately half-yearly meetings provide scope for questions from industry and fundamental topics.

At the committee’s annual meetings, the working groups present their activities and main results. This keeps the different subject areas connected through shared exchange.

Representatives from industry and university institutions bring general problems in their field and fundamental questions to the discussion.

Addressing questions

Industrial and fundamental questions can lead to joint work and R&D projects.

Depending on the question, work is carried out bilaterally or multilaterally, with self-funding or external funding. The committee initiates research and development projects through public funding bodies.

Professional development

Knowledge along the manufacturing chain

The aim is to develop joint professional-development measures for employees of industrial companies.

Qualification questions affect production, maintenance, commercial functions, and management. They include process knowledge and materials-science relationships within the manufacturing chain.

Drawing wires, rods, and tubes is an established process for manufacturing high-quality semi-finished products in the long-products sector. High requirements for geometric and material tolerances and properties, together with economic considerations, continue to drive development in this field.

The scope includes metals such as copper, aluminium, steel, and magnesium as well as hybrid material combinations, for example metal/polymer or combinations of different metals. Global competition in tube and wire production increases pressure on manufacturers. At the same time, quality requirements for products are rising, along with the need for qualification.

This need affects production, maintenance, and commercial functions through to all levels of management. In addition to specific process knowledge, materials-science relationships within the manufacturing chain are relevant.
