The DGM Expert Committee Hybrid Materials and Structures addresses hybrid structural materials for lightweight construction. Its focus is on combinations of composites and metals and their use in components.

The committee brings together experts from materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and physics with raw material manufacturers and processors, as well as representatives from the automotive and aerospace sectors.

Exchange Across the Technical Network

The committee organizes the international conference Hybrid Structures and Materials and takes part in the symposium Composites and Material Composites.

Its regular meetings are often held jointly with the Working Group Composites with Aluminium of the Expert Committee Aluminium. The committee’s tasks also include conferences and training courses that support exchange between the participating disciplines.

Material combinations for structural components

Hybrid materials combine different material classes in order to make targeted use of their properties within one component. For combinations of composites and metals, the interaction of material, interface, component design, and manufacturing is decisive.

Manufacturing, behaviour, and circularity

Reliable use across a broader range of applications requires an understanding of the relationships from materials production and component manufacturing through design to behaviour analysis over the full life cycle. Experimentation, design, and numerical simulation complement one another in this work. The efficient recycling of hybrid materials and structures is also an important issue.
