Mechanical surface treatments such as shot peening, surface plastic deformation, roller burnishing or ultrasonic impact induce plastic deformation, near-surface hardening and compressive residual stresses. This improves fatigue strength, wear and corrosion resistance and coating adhesion. Process parameters control roughness, work hardening level and crack nucleation.
