Textures on material surfaces affect friction, wettability, adhesion and optical behavior. Hierarchical micro- and nanotextures are produced by laser processing, etching, embossing or machining. Structural parameters such as periodicity, roughness and geometry govern mechanical interactions, surface energy and functionality in applications ranging from tribology to biomaterials.
