Functional Materials

Functional materials are engineered to exhibit specific physical or chemical properties for applications such as sensing, actuation, energy storage or catalysis. Examples include ferroelectrics, piezo/magnetostrictive materials, semiconductors and catalytic nanostructures. Design is achieved by controlling composition, defects and interfaces from the nano‑ to macroscopic scale.
