Internships “Materials Vacation”: Innovative Learning in the World of Materials

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is offering interested students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the exciting world of materials technology during the fall break under the motto "Experiment like a professional". In cooperation with renowned research institutions throughout Germany, the "Materials Holidays" program offers practical experience and a deeper understanding of the development and application of new materials.

Innovative learning on site and virtually
The program includes one-week laboratory internships for secondary school students aged 16 and over. These take place during the fall break at leading research institutions. Participants gain practical experience working with high-tech equipment and experience first-hand the production of materials such as metallic lightweight materials or the synthesis of catalysts. Under the guidance of scientists, they have the opportunity to experiment for themselves and get answers to their questions.

Those who prefer to take a look at the laboratories from home can take part in the “Virtual Lab Days” or the “Girls' Day”. These virtual events are aimed at upper secondary school pupils and girls from year 5 onwards. They offer exciting insights into the everyday life of researchers and teach the basics of materials technologies via online platforms.

Behind the scenes of materials science
During the “Materials Holidays”, participants learn how innovative materials are developed to solve key issues of the future. Whether it is climate and environmental protection, sustainable water and energy supply or the fight against widespread diseases - new materials play a key role. For example, structured materials are used to specifically combat cancer cells or are used in the production of scratch-resistant car paints and dirt-repellent clothing.

By dealing with these topics in a practical way, pupils not only gain valuable knowledge, but also an idea of the wide range of career opportunities in materials science and materials engineering. The importance of materials becomes clear through their application in almost all technological innovations, such as the use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics for lighter vehicles or graphene for more efficient solar cells.

Exclusive insights into renowned research institutions
The “Materials Holidays” offer exclusive insights into the work of leading research institutions in Germany. Participants can look forward to virtual laboratory tours and, if they are particularly interested and lucky, one-week internships.

The “Materials Holidays” offer school students interested in technology a unique opportunity to engage intensively with the fascinating world of materials technologies. Whether virtually or on-site, participating in this program is a valuable step towards a possible career in this forward-looking field.
