The award of an honorary doctorate recognizes his successful research in the field of biomaterials and his collaboration with Åbo Akademi University. Boccaccini has been a member of the DGM for more than 30 years. In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious DGM Prize. He represents (since 2017) the DGM on the Executive Committee of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS), of which he is currently Vice President. Boccaccini currently chairs the DGM Regional Forum Erlangen, founded in 2018, and has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the MSE Congress organized by DGM for more than 10 years.
