Friction 2024: Recap of the Successful Tribology Symposium

The 6th European Symposium on Friction, Wear and Wear Protection, a leading symposium in the field of tribology organized by the German Society for Materials Science (DGM), has closed its doors after two inspiring days. With experts from 13 countries in attendance, the hybrid event provided a platform for the exchange of significant research findings and dialog between science and practice.

The Friction 2024 Symposium, a key event in the world of materials science and tribology, came to a successful close after two eventful days. Held in picturesque Oberhof (Germany) as well as virtually, this symposium brought together 55 experts from 13 different countries to discuss the latest advances in research and development in the field of ultra-low friction and wear. This topic is becoming increasingly important, especially in times of advancing e-mobility, the wind power generation and the development of environmentally friendly lubricants.

The event was characterized by a diverse program that included 5 keynote speeches, 28 lectures and poster pitch presentations. Participants had the opportunity to gain in-depth insights into current research work and future trends in tribology. A special highlight was the Joint SSliP-Supra Slide Session, which bridged the gap between current research topics and practical applications and once again underlined the importance of the DGM as a central platform for scientific exchange.

The awarding of the poster prize to Dr. Aslihan Sayilan, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Ecully (France) for her outstanding research paper on "Tribochemistry of sulfur-containing additives on DLC materials: Contribution of Electronic Spectroscopies" marked one of the highlights of the symposium. Dr. Sayilan's paper, which highlighted the application of electronic spectroscopies, was rewarded with a ticket to the prestigious Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Congress 2024, underlining the quality and relevance of the research presented.

In addition to the technical discussions and presentations, the symposium also offered participants a unique excursion to the bobsleigh track in Oberhof. This activity was not just for fun - although the ride in the double wok was certainly a highlight - but also provided valuable insights into the application of tribological knowledge in sports equipment construction, particularly in runner preparation.

The DGM would like to thank all participants of the Friction 2024 Symposium for their contributions and commitment, which made the symposium a complete success, and especially Prof. Dr. Dienwiebel and Prof. Dr. Gachot for the successful collaboration. The DGM is already looking forward to future events and the continuation of the fruitful exchange of ideas and research results.

For all those who were unable to attend or would like to review the highlights of the symposium, a picture gallerywith impressions of the event is available online. The DGM looks forward to welcoming the participants and all interested parties again at future events and thanks them for their continued support and commitment to the world of tribology.
