News from the world of additive manufacturing: Highlights of the DGM technical committee meeting on 26.03.2024

On March 26, 2024, representatives from industry and research in the field of additive manufacturing once again met online to exchange ideas in the DGM's "Additive Manufacturing" expert committee: 28 participants and three presentations.

The first presentation was given by Dr. Astrid Rota, who presented the latest developments at Kurtz GmbH & Co. KG regarding powder bed based laser melting with a kinematic laser guidance system. In the presentation, Perfect Angle Printing as an alternative technology approach for large-area LPBF components, Dr. Rota demonstrated the advantages of a laser beam that is always perfectly orthogonal to the powder bed.

The second presentation was by Ms. Marie Franke-Jurisch and was entitled Processing of high-performance materials in PBF-EB/M technology. The audience was given a broad understanding of powder bed based electron beam melting. The advantages and use cases of the technology were communicated with a variety of microstructure analyses of different high-performance materials.

The last lecture was the presentation of a project outline of the Chair of Materials Testing Technology (WPT) and the Technical University of Dortmund presented by Alexander Koch. The project outline Qualification of a generic component reference body and efficient test concept for the derivation of failure-relevant local characteristic values for the PBF-LB/M process stimulated an interesting discussion with a lot of participation.

In addition to the exciting presentations, Dr. Stefan Klein also drew attention to the Additive2024 conference taking place in June. This symposium will mainly take place in Bremen, but will also have some speakers in Berlin and broadcast everything online. The DGM also has a new website and the members' area has been completely revised. The individual specialist committees now have the opportunity to network more easily and efficiently in the form of chats, forums or open, virtual video conference rooms.

Finally, the announcement by the host, Prof. Vasily Ploshikhin, should be mentioned. The IGF projects have a new project sponsor in the DLR. More information can be found in the infographic in the minutes of the March Technical Committee meeting or online.

The next meeting is expected to take place online as usual on 24 October 2024 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
