Advancing Mechanical Surface Treatments: Fraunhofer IWM Hosts Expert Committee Meeting

Hosted by Fraunhofer IWM in Freiburg, Germany, the DGM's Expert Committee on Mechanical Surface Treatments gathered to explore and share groundbreaking developments in surface technologies, featuring interdisciplinary research and discussions on emerging applications in additive manufacturing and beyond.

DGM's Mechanical Surface Treatments Expert Committee met at Fraunhofer IWM in Freiburg, Germany, to discuss new developments in mechanical surface treatment. Jan Schubnell and Jürgen Hoffmeister (committee chair) opened the meeting by providing key organizational insights and introducing the host institute's contributions to the field.

Daniel Meyer presented innovative work on the integration of roller burnishing into additive manufacturing, setting the stage for an exciting future of interdisciplinary research. This was followed by Fabian Keil and colleagues' detailed analysis of shot peening simulations for additive manufactured materials, highlighting the intricacies of ball dynamics.

A mid-morning coffee break allowed for rich dialogue among the participants, leading into Hendrik Liborius' exploration of the impact of diamond smoothening on surface properties. Matthias Hettig's session on surface structuring by machine hammer peening offered innovative techniques for improving material properties.

The afternoon sessions began with Ardeshir Sarmast's comparison of XRD methods for stress analysis, essential for quality assurance of industrial parts. The committee showed its commitment to establishing a guideline for future activities. Finally, Jürgen Hoffmeister announced plans for future meetings. The meeting concluded with a tour of the Fraunhofer Institute, where the technologies of Fraunhofer IWM were demonstrated.

Many thanks to Jan Schubnell and his team at Fraunhofer IWM for organizing this event.
