On 16 April 2024, the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf reached an important milestone in its almost hundred-year history: it was officially renamed the "Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials". The new name symbolizes the institute's strategic reorientation towards sustainable solutions in the fields of energy, mobility, infrastructure and medicine.

The German Society for Materials Science (DGM) congratulates the Institute on this decisive step and recognizes the importance of the renaming for the research community and industry. "This reorientation is a forward-looking step towards meeting the growing ecological and social challenges of our time," says Dr. Stefan Klein, Managing Director of the DGM.

The newly named Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials is now increasingly dedicated to the development and research of materials that are both environmentally friendly and efficient. One focus is on the reduction of CO2 emissions during production and the further development of recycling technologies.

The renaming of the institute reflects the need to adapt research and technology development to the needs of sustainable development. It is a clear commitment to a science that is not only innovative, but also responsible towards the environment and future generations.

With its long-standing tradition and expertise, the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials is setting new standards in research into sustainable technologies. It promises to play a key role in overcoming the challenges of climate change and in safeguarding our livelihoods.  The Institute thus remains a central player in the global research landscape, providing innovative solutions to the pressing problems of our time.
