Inauguration of the Herbert Gleiter International Institute in Shenyang

On 3 April 2024, the Chinese Academy of Sciences opened a pioneering research center, the Herbert Gleiter International Institute, in Shenyang. This center will specialize in the development and research of nanoglass and is part of the Academy's strategic expansion in the field of materials science and engineering.

In the academic city of Shenyang, a central hub for scientific research in China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has opened the Herbert Gleiter International Institute. The new research center is specifically dedicated to the production, structure and unique properties of nanoscale, non-crystalline solids known as nanoglass.

With a staff of approximately 350 researchers, the institute will not only expand the region's research capacity, but also re-establish Shenyang as a global center of attraction for materials scientists and engineers. The opening ceremony on 3 April 2024 underscored the significance of this milestone, with the State Secretary handing over the certificate and an impressive opening program highlighting the Institute's visionary architecture.

The institute's namesake, Professor Dr. Herbert Gleiter, is a renowned materials scientist and has been a member of the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) for decades. Professor Gleiter has received numerous awards from the DGM over the years, including the "Masing Prize" and the "Heyn Commemorative Medal". His appointment as Director of the Institute for the next five years underlines his outstanding role in the scientific community.

The Herbert Gleiter International Institute will not only contribute to scientific research, but also promote international cooperation in materials science and engineering. With its focus on innovative materials such as nanoglass, the Institute is at the forefront of research and development and is poised to achieve both theoretical and application-oriented breakthroughs.

The strategic positioning of the institute in Shenyang – together with the high-profile opening ceremony and the involvement of internationally renowned scientists such as Professor Gleiter – sets new standards in research and is sure to attract national and international attention.
