There have always been good contacts between the DGM-related research institutes and universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, which focus on materials research. It is difficult to keep track of this in detail, but some examples can be mentioned. For example, the colloquia of the MPI für Eisenforschung GmbH Düsseldorf have long been focal points for the meeting and exchange of materials researchers from the Rhine and Ruhr.
There were joint events between the Institute of Physical Metallurgy at RWTH Aachen University and the Chair of Materials Science at Ruhr University Bochum in the field of martensite research. In the Collaborative Research Center 316, the University of Dortmund and the Ruhr University Bochum worked together on the production, processing, and testing of metallic and metal-ceramic composites. And many more comparable examples could be mentioned.
At the DGM Day in Bochum on May 23, 2013, the DGM-related materials researchers of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to establish a DGM Regional Forum Rhine-Ruhr. The initiative was supported by all university locations (Aachen, Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg-Essen, Siegen, Paderborn) and by the research institutes in the region (DLR, FZ Jülich and MPIE). Since its foundation, the Rhine-Ruhr Regional Forum has held annual 2-day meetings at which participants present their scientific and technical activities and jointly discuss important developments from the materials sector.
