From Experiments to Simulation: The “Accompanying Elements in Aluminum” Working Group Meets at Nuremberg Institute of Technology

On 6 June 2024, the DGM working group "Accompanying Elements in Aluminum" of the Technical Committee Aluminum met at the Nuremberg Institute of Technology in presence and online. The interest in understanding the impact of accompanying elements from the atomic level to the most diverse properties with the idea of sustainable aluminum was clearly noticeable among the 19 participants. A lively exchange led to a strong link between the perspectives of industry and research.

The evening meeting on 5 June 2024 in a very relaxed atmosphere in the historic ambience of the Kopernikus restaurant also contributed to this. Six participants found their way to this beautiful location, where they were able to enjoy one of the first summer evenings with interesting technical and informal topics.

In an open-minded atmosphere on 6 June 2024, experts from science, industry and professional associations presented the handling and effects of accompanying elements in aluminum alloys. Again and again, the reference to current, application-related issues in connection with "sustainable aluminum" or "green aluminum" became clear. There was great interest in the challenges for materials science and the processes of materials technology. This year, the focus was on everything from calculations and simulations to technologically and analytically complex experiments. The discussed range of necessary experiments and simulations from thermodynamics to microstructures and mechanical properties highlight the need for research and development. The inclusion of environmental aspects such as sustainability and resource conservation is important to the participants.

After two very interesting days, the expert meeting "Accompanying elements in aluminum" of one of the most renowned DGM expert committees "Aluminum" came to a successful end with consistently positive feedback from the participants. Nicolas Kamp clarifies the willingness of the host Novelis to hold the working group on accompanying elements in aluminum at the industrial company in 2025. Initial content will be defined in a one-hour online meeting at the end of 2024.

Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Simon Reichstein, whose commitment enabled the working group to meet at Nuremberg Institute of Technology despite organizational challenges, including flooding. Many thanks to Dr. Hanka Becker, Dr. Torsten Staab and Prof. Dr. Krug for the structural and technical organization of the working group.
